I made French Onion Soup to eat with this bread because I felt like it was good for dipping the bread and I like this soup. It’s not really traditional in my family or anything but one time I was on a business trip and I went to Epcot and ate the soup in a French restaurant and I have liked it ever since. That night I also made a friend who was a veteran and a double amputee. So, I have been thinking about Appreciation with a Loaf of Bread project since you first emailed me about it. I want to preface by saying that in many regards this has been a very painful year in regards to personal relationships and self-love (not to mention graduating into the pandemic). The day you dropped off the bread, I had all of these plans to go for a morning jog and apply for jobs. Unfortunately, I was dealing with some pretty debilitating anxiety and stayed in my bed half of the day. I wasn’t sure when the last time I had eaten (because when I am stressed I can forget to eat). The bread meant so much to me. Not only was it super delicious, it filled me and gave me strength to do some of the things I had intended to do with my day. I shared the other half of the loaf with my neighbor on Thanksgiving. She absolutely loved it! I did snap a picture on the day I received the bread but I am truly embarrassed how this took me so long to submit. I should have messaged you right away! Reflecting on things, I am reminded of when Jesus fed the multitude with bread and fish. Not only was this miraculous and fed a lot of people….the majority of the people did not say "thank you" and there's no evidence any of them actually followed Jesus after the miracle. They were hungry, Jesus made them food, and they ate. I used to judge them pretty harshly. But now, I see myself in them. I like to think of myself as a grateful person and I strive to follow through with my commitments. The crusty outer layer gives my knife and hand a workout. Once I've pieced this outer layer I begin to create a piece. I see the bubbles and spaces. I press my finger into the center of the 1st slice and take a little bread from the middle and place it into my mouth. Suddenly I'm transported to the kitchens of those that love me best. I'm warm. Your entire being shifts into survival mode as you catch a rip tide in the matrix. This wasn’t where I wanted to go and this is definitely not the place I want to be. Before I knew it even the people I loved looked like strangers. Some turned into monsters. Maybe I created these illusions in my head. Maybe my reality is this paradigm. This warped perspective left me with little apatite. And even though I am buried in the debris of my chaotic life, I keep searching for the light. I was once told “there is a crack in everything, a crack that can let the light shine through.” Its an old song that sparked something in me. A quest to find the light even though I felt broken. And like that. Bread. The one thing I can tolerate when I am repulsed by eating. And not just any bread. Sourdough. My favorite! I just knew that there was something way more special to this already amazing experience. I went from just picking off little pieces to keep my turning stomach from aching. I found excitement. I don’t know if that was an ingredient that I overlooked, but it was the brightest flavor. I found love in forgiveness and gratitude in respect. I ran out of bread but I have so much appreciation for those who have stayed by me when my days go dim. Continuously using their own light to help me. This past December, my grandfather passed away due to Covid, and he was a very special man to many. His passing was very sudden and unexpected and hit many very people, but despite that, it has brought my family closer together... my mom, brother, and I had the opportunity to move in with my grandma after our grandpa’s passing and we’ve been able to spend more time together with my extended family. There are many moments that my grandma, mom, and I share in the kitchen; learning new recipes, experimenting and trying new things: like this clam chowder!
